(Page Two)

Sunday morning.  With only three races sailed Saturday everybody was hoping for at least a couple more, but Mother Nature had a chip on her shoulder and wouldn't deliver more than spasmodic zephyrs.

The Race Committee used all the tricks in the manual to attract a breeze, but....

So-o-o, as noontime approached it was apparent the series would stand on the three races Saturday.  Palmetto Lightning Fleet Captain Terry Tyner handed out the prizes on the big front porch of the Columbia Sailing Club and gave the 3rd place silver to himself!  Here he is at left with his crew Patrick Wilson of Charleston, and Allison Calhoun of the Columbia Sailing Club.  (Terry is a member of CSC as well.)

2nd place went to Richard Waldkirch of Wrightsville.  From l-r Mickey Sullivan, Katie Elmer, and Richard.

1st place went to Greg Griffin of Jacksonville, FL.  His crew were Mark Redaway and Mark's nephew, J.D. Redawayof Atlanta.

These photos were drastically shrunk to fit the page.  The original images remain in file and a few  appeared in the club newsletter in glorious black and white!

Special thanks to

for getting us close to the action.

The SELD perpetual trophy went home to
Wilmington with Richard Waldkirch.  (Greg Griffin's
home port is just outside the three state district.)

And there was a surprise presentation of a handsome meticulously crafted Lightning model just created by the new Palmetto Fleet #440 to be given each year to the top competitor in the fleet.  The model was made by William Freeman, Sr. and given in his honor by his family.  Terry Tyner (right) made the beautiful base upon which it is mounted.

The first recipient is John Wrisley, a great-grandfather who is not often at a tiller any more.  As best we can remember it had something to do with his efforts in re-establishing interest in Lightnings on Lake Murray.  He used to own #9505 and raced it on the SAYRA circuit many years ago.  He was Commodore of SAYRA in 1962.
